I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for my lack of posting as of late. While I have never been on a particular schedule, the last few months have been quite bad. There have been many life-changing events going on for me as of late, not to mention school being ridiculously busy. But I am done with this quarter in a few weeks, at which point I will move to St. Louis, take step 1 of my boards, and then proceed to drink heavily until rotations start in the beginning of July. So I have recently been having a lot of trouble with mail delivery. Seems things have been taking forever to get here (netflix deliveries for example, were taking 3 days now are usually 5), and a package sent to me mysteriously disappeared only to be returned to the sender two weeks later. So I have devised a plan to find out for sure what the hell is going on. I will let you all know how it turns out...

Just a few quick bits o' news. Wii fit is still going well. It's been over 10 months since I started with it, and today my weight was 174lbs. This finally brings my BMI under "so fat you gonna die" to an acceptable "maybe you should skip the doughnuts this morning buddy". While the weight loss has slowed, I am happy with the maintenance. Usually I am fatter than holy hell again by now.
Four tests this week. Yay...
Also, regarding the neurology test in my last comic- I actually managed to get 100%. Turns out 2+2 really does equal pajamas.

This just in! Important people wear jeans! Holy crap, what could this possibly mean? Well, thanks to The Wall Street Journal we need no longer live in fear of powerful people and their casual leg ware. According to the old Journal "Chosen well, jeans can suggest the wearer is confident and modern. Traditionally cut blue jeans carry a whiff of the laborer about them, so denim on a leader suggests a willingness to roll up the sleeves and dig in. There's also something of the rebel in a pair of jeans. In the boardroom, that can read as creative."
I disagree. I believe that important people are now wearing jeans for one simple reason. They all woke up one morning and decided that they were tired of these mother-$@#!%@^ slacks on these mother-%@$!#@% business trips.

So it seems most people have no idea what is actually involved in becoming a doctor. It's OK, I didn't either until I started school. So here is the basic breakdown:
Years 1-2- Basic science and clinical education in the classroom
Years 2-4- Rotations in hospital and private practices gaining hands on experience.
After year 4 you graduate and become a doctor. However, you are not yet licensed to practice unsupervised so you go to residency, or specialty training. This is when you learn to be an internist, or family practitioner, or surgeon, etc... During this time you are paid (but much less than an attending physician is paid). Residencies last anywhere from 1 year (psychiatry) to 7 years (neurosurgery) with an average of 3 for most. After residency there is also the option of doing a fellowship, which allow you to sub-specialize (cardiology, ICU, infectious diseases, etc...)
There ya have it.
Also: D.O.= Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. As a D.O. I will have the ability to sit for M.D. boards (although MD's are not allowed to sit for D.O. boards).

So I keep hearing people say that if the current health care reform bills are passed that you will no longer be able to enroll in a private health insurance program unless it is part of a government exchange, or the public health insurance option. I thought this preposterous, so I started reading the bill for myself to see what the hell was going on. Then I found this:

SEC. 102. PROTECTING THE CHOICE TO KEEP CURRENT COVERAGE.
7(a) Grandfathered Health Insurance Coverage Defined- Subject to the succeeding provisions of this section, for purposes of establishing acceptable coverage under this division, the term ‘grandfathered health insurance coverage’ means individual health insurance coverage that is offered and in force and effect before the first day of Y1 if the following conditions are met:

(1) LIMITATION ON NEW ENROLLMENT-

(A) IN GENERAL- Except as provided in this paragraph, the individual health insurance issuer offering such coverage does not enroll any individual in such coverage if the first effective date of coverage is on or after the first day of Y1.

This is directly from H.R. 3200 as introduced in the house. So when Obama says we can keep our current coverage, does he mean we have freedom of choice to pursue health insurance? Or does that mean we can keep our current plan, but if we want a new one we must go through the government?
I am all for health care reform. I am in favor of a public option. The national health insurance exchange sounds like a good idea to me too. However, the above statements are very confusing. So I need some feedback. What is your opinion of the above referenced section? Am I missing the point somehow?

A friend of mine from school yesterday pointed out a very interesting bit of information. In her opinion, insurance companies are evil. I laughed and agreed, saying that any system in which accountants make medical decisions is bound to be screwed beyond all reason. She quickly corrected me to say that insurance companies are, in fact, EVIL.
Her logic:
Insurance companies routinely deny coverage to people with easily controlled illnesses due to the possibility that the patient will develop a more significant illness in the future. In doing so they cause the denied patient suffering. By doing this, they increase their profit margin.
So insurance companies cause suffering for the sake of monetary gain.

I know I said the caption contest comic would be up by now. I have a confession...congratulations Evan, you have out funnied me. I have been staring at that panel for a week now and I can not come up with anything that makes "With Master Chiefs extreme bacon, only the sun is hot enough" any better. It is fantastic as a single panel, and to be honest I laughed so much I had to change my pants...So I apologize for my inability, and you win this round sir.

For anyone who reads this still and is interested, I will be in St. Louis from July 12-July 25 for a preceptorship. Although I will be in clinic and hospital most of the time, I am sure I will find some free time. On a side note, if anyone who is familiar with the current state of the highway 40 construction could tell me if it is open all the way up to brentwood, it would be much appreciated.

A few things to talk about today, most of which would be awkward in comic form.
First, a winner of the caption contest has been chosen, and the comic will be up in a few days. Thanks again to everyone for posting ideas, some of you owe me a new pair of pants.
Next, this really has been a crappy week to be famous. Dr. Jerri Nielsen, Michael Jackson, and Billy Mays had a particularly rough week. Of the three, it is Billy Mays whose death has affected me the most.
Obviously I did not know Billy, and many of you may be wondering how I could possibly care about the screaming man in the blue shirt. I have always made fun of Billy Mays, and I have never believed in the validity of products sold through direct response media (infomercials). I always considered Mays to be an "if it exists and can make me money I'll sell it" kind of guy. Then Discovery began airing a show called "Pitchmen". This show followed Billy Mays and his business partner Anthony Sullivan as they found new products, filmed commercials for them, worked with the inventors, and ultimately marketed the products.
Pitchmen showed a different side of Billy Mays. It showed that although it was in fact difficult to fit his ego in a room with anyone else, he also cared very much about the products he sold. He used all of the products that he sold, and was passionate about being successful for the inventors. Billy had realized the American Dream (if such a thing still exists), and his goal in life was to help others do the same.
So I guess Billy Mays' death shows the power of television and its influence on my generation. I felt like I was just getting to know Mays, and now he will never yell at me at 3am ever again.
On a separate note, I believe Billy Mays may have single handedly built and destroyed the infomercial business. Go ahead, name another pitchman (Anthony Sullivan doesn't count since I just mentioned him). That guy from shamwow? He beat up a hooker, how successful will he be selling family products. Who else? Who could possibly step in and be the next Billy Mays? It can't be done. Elvis could not be replaced, Bruce Lee could not be replaced, and Billy Mays won't be replaced. Direct response media will never be the same.
In conclusion: Someday I will grab a bottle of Oxiclean and yell about how great it is, my kids will look at me like I'm crazy, and I will be a bit sad...

The U.S. Attorney's office has frozen over $30 million in winnings owed to online poker players in an attempt to crack down on the online poker industry. Players who recently attempted to deposit checks from online winnings, many of which depend on online poker to pay their bills, were greeted by a wonderful bounced check fee. While the government contends that online poker is illegal, the actual laws regarding the issue are so vague that no one can actually tell one way or another...

This is seriously fucked up. I am ecstatic to see that our government, having solved all our other problems, is now going after the assets of law abiding citizens. Why is this happening? Who at the justice department was attacked by online poker as a child? Who decided it was worthwhile to waste taxpayer money to come and take away mine?

Honestly, I am so pissed right now I can barely compose a coherent sentence (as I am sure you can tell). My gas and electricity are both about to get shut off due to an unexpected emergency room visit that has left me completely broke, and my only hope for paying these bills was to win a poker tournament. Now I can't do that because some jackass, who I am sure is well payed, decided to throw a fit and take the money away from me. I can't get a job that will pay me enough to cover these bills in time, and I don't own anything of value that I can sell, so what am I supposed to do? I won a free tournament to get into this larger game, and now it won't even matter if I win...guess I better start finding some candles...
